As a former Corporate Retail Buyer for several Fortune 500 Retailers, attending trade shows was, and still is, truly an inspirational high for me, and my absolute favorite part about being in the retail industry!

Making sure you are making strategic merchandise buying and inventory management decisions is crucial as you scale your brick-and-mortar or e-commerce store!
Attending trade shows allows you to not only see, touch, and feel the products in person, but also allows you to meet the vendors behind the products, and create relationships.
A part of being a successful Buyer is about how strong of relationships you make with your suppliers!
When you have strong supplier relationships, you can negotiate better payment terms, get early access to new products and industry insights, and can have an overall more seamless and efficient buying process.

Oh, one more thing! I beg you – DO NOT buy merchandise vendor lists.
There are millions of products and vendors worldwide available to do business with.
A vendor list means you are purchasing the same vendors that hundreds or even thousands of other boutiques are – hence competing with one another and not creating your own brand identity – which is not a sustainable business model.
If you’ve had thoughts about purchasing a vendor list, I would recommend you ask yourself what your passion is – is it to just make money, or is it to serve unique and curated pieces to your customers?
The most exciting part of owning a boutique is the hunt for merchandise and the highs of the finds.
